A U.S. company said Wednesday that it plans to begin construction this year in northern China of one of the world's biggest
solar power plants.
First Solar Inc. signed an agreement in Beijing with a major state-owned utility company to build the massive plant in Ordos, a
city in Inner Mongolia. The Arizona-based company, which makes thin-film photovoltaic modules, said in a press release that
the project -- first announced in 2009 -- represents the first large-scale solar collaboration between China and the United
States.
The plant, to be built in stages through 2020, is slated to generate 2 gigawatts of electricity, the equivalent of two coal-fired
plants. China Guangdong Nuclear Solar Energy Development Co. will become the majority partner in the facility's first phase,
which is produce 30 megawatts of power.
"We see China Guangdong Nuclear as being a very strong, viable and important partner," First Solar's president, Bruce Sohn,
told reporters, according to the Associated Press. He said it would supply engineering skills and influence in China's energy
market, which has increasingly embraced renewable energy sources.
China, which is heavily subsidizing the development of its solar power industry, plans to get 15% of its power from renewable
sources by 2020.
