A construction expert said a "rookie mistake" led to a fatal accident in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province on Friday, when a steel
structure on an overpass that was under construction collapsed, plunging seven workers to their deaths.
An unidentified construction expert told the Nanjing-based Yangtze Evening Post Sunday that the accident "was a very rookie
mistake and the tragedy should not have happened."
The tragedy occurred Friday at 8:30 pm when a 41-meter-long steel panel attached to the overpass weighing 180 tons gave
way. Seven workers operating on the platform died and three others under the overpass were injured.
Local residents told the paper that they thought it was an "earthquake" when the accident occurred.
"Preliminary findings suggested that the cause of this accident was a result of a violation of the standard construction
procedures and absence of site management. It was a safety accident due to negligence," the Nanjing publicity department
said in a press release Saturday, adding that further investigations were needed to determine who will be held responsible.
The Jiangsu branch of the 24th Bureau of the China Railway Group is in charge of the project, the report said.
The expert told the paper that workers must have neglected to fix the steel structure onto the bridge before carrying out
further operations.
Another local newspaper, Modern Express, Sunday cited a technology consultant to the project as saying the workers must
have violated certain regulations in order to complete the project before the scheduled deadline of December 5.
The overpass was part of a road extension project to ease the city's traffic.
Doctors at the local Mingji Hospital said the three injured suffered from bone fractures and other minor injuries, but are in
stable condition.
