One of Las Vegas’ recent road construction projects has been selected as a finalist for a national award, and the
public has been invited to weigh in.
The Interstate 15 North Design-Build Project is one of 10 finalists in the America’s Transportation Awards
competition, which is sponsored by the American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials, AAA and the
U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
Each of the transportation association’s four regional associations gave awards for projects in four categories:
Best recovery act project, on time, under budget and innovative management.
The I-15 project won the on-time award for the western region and was selected as a finalist for the national grand
prize and the people’s choice awards, which will be presented Oct. 31 at a national conference in Mississippi.
Nevada’s project was one of 10 out of 43 projects from 29 states eligible for the national awards.
Online voting for the people’s choice award is open until Oct. 18 at americastransportationaward.org. Nevada’s
Department of Transportation is actively soliciting votes for its project.
The I-15 project was Nevada’s first design-build project and was finished more than a year earlier than expected.
The $250 million project’s primary purpose was to widen the freeway from the Spaghetti Bowl to Craig Road.
“The project was exemplary in so many ways,” said NDOT Director Susan Martinovich in a statement after winning
the regional award. Martinovich is also vice president of the national association.
“Partnering with our contractors, implementing ‘outside-of-the-box’ strategies, and receiving support from the
public made this project a huge success, and one that we are very proud of,” she said.
If the project wins the people’s choice award, NDOT will receive $10,000 to donate to a charity or scholarship
fund.
