GS Engineering & Construction Corp. will build the world’s largest tidal power plant in South Korea, as the
country boosts investments in renewal energy on environmental concerns.
The facility, to be operated by Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co., will have a total project cost of 3.9 trillion
won ($3.4 billion), GS Engineering said today in an e-mailed statement. Construction at a site in Incheon, near
Seoul, will begin in the second half of 2011, pending approvals from regulators, it added.
The tidal power plant, with a capacity of 1.32 million kilowatts, is part of South Korea’s efforts to pare emissions,
which also include plans to increase the number of nuclear power stations to 32 from 20 by 2022. South Korean
companies will likely invest more than 4 trillion won in renewable energy this year, up from 3.2 trillion won last
year, according to a government forecast.
