The Nanjing municipal government said 500,000 yuan ($73,250) would be used to repair cracks in the city’s Hanzhongmen
Bridge, after an outcry over attempts by a local construction team to fix the cracks with glue, according to state media reports.
The 120-meter bridge is key in connecting Hexi district and downtown Nanjing. Construction on it started three years ago and
the bridge was completed on Nov.18, 2008, a lucky date in Chinese culture. The bridge also earned a Nanjing design award
for “excellent construction projects” in June this year.
One year after completion, officials found cracks in 50 bridge railings large enough to insert a finger caused by factors
involving building materials reacting differently to heat and ground sinkage, according to an announcement on the government
Web site. (the announcement )
Public indignation arose when Nanjingers discovered one morning that the bridge had been mended with glue overnight. One
Internet user angrily wrote on Sina,”It is obviously a shoddily built project.” Another netizen’s ironic comment: “Glue can not
only revamp a damaged bridge but also fix our broken hearts.”
According to Xinhua, the Nanjing government ordered the construction team to go back to the bridge and repair it before the
end of next month and pay the 500,000 yuan bill themselves. It said it will investigate the matter further.
